To leverage the momentum of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship being in St. Joseph and also the significant aesthetic upgrades that are ongoing at Civic Arena, the St. Joseph Sports Commission is proud to announce the creation of the inaugural St. Joseph NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Central Region Showcase November 10-11, 2023. The event features eight teams competing in eight games (four per day) as part of the opening weekend of the division II basketball season.
“In the continued quest to create events that fill fit and niche, we knew with the many teams competing in the regional crossover exemption weekend allowed by the NCAA to begin each season, an event of this format was an obvious opportunity to continue to bring high level basketball competition to St. Joseph,” said Brett Esely Executive Director of the St. Joseph Sports Commission.
The field which features Missouri Western also includes Fort Hays State from the MIAA, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene from the Great American Conference along with Concordia-St. Paul, Minot State, Minnesota State and Winona State from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Four of these teams (MWSU, Fort Hays State, Minnesota State and Southern Nazarene) finished the season ranked in the top 10 of the Central Region rankings.
“Any time we have the opportunity to showcase our local teams in our local venues, we want to do that. Additionally, we are always seeking marquee regional match-ups to showcase here in which people want to come to St. Joseph. Additionally, right in the middle of our stint hosting the Elite Eight, teams want to come play where they are all trying to get to in March. We look forward to a high level of competition this coming November!” Esely stated.
This event compliments an already exciting schedule of basketball coming to Civic Arena over the winter months which includes the following events:
November 10-11 – NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Central Region Showcase
December 9 – Bill Snyder Women’s Basketball Classic – Kansas State vs. Mizzou
December 20-22 – St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame High School Holiday Hoops Classic presented by United Fiber
March 18-22 – NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship
Ticket information will be released in early fall in which all sales will be facilitated through the Civic Arena Box Office. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available by contacting the sports commission.
